Re: S.E.O. Search Engine Optimization Strategies Update
2002
Recent renovations in Search Engines have forced many optimization companies to rethink their strategies. It has become
increasingly hard to sustain placement as more and more companies realize the benefit of proper Search Engine Placement. Keywords now have value and are being sold like real estate on the Internet.
My practice of "hand submissions" to the major search engines has yielded a generous influx of traffic from 'free
submit' engines & directories.
However, many of these same traffic providers have made the switch to "paid inclusion". Let's not mistake this for "pay per review", "paid placement" or "pay-per-click" because its not quite the same. Let me explain.
- Paid Inclusion- simply means that there is a guarantee that you website URL (domain name) will be included in their
directories. Until recently, being included in a Search Engine was not a guarantee.
In most cases where a website had valid content on a particular subject in demand, the URL would be accepted anywhere from 1 week to 9 months later. This is no longer the case as 'free submits' are no longer accepted. It is up to your search engine optimization experts to find your placement near the top with their marketing strategies such as page titles, meta tags, meta descriptions, keyword density per page, etc. These fees simply guarantee 'inclusion' where you are relevant to their directory. <<AOL, ASK.com, AskJeeves.com, Teoma.com (formerly Direct Hit), Hot Bot, Iwon, Inktomi.com, Lycos, Overture.com secondary listings (formerly GoTo/Go.com)>>
- Pay Per Click/Paid Placement – this type of Search Engine placement is becoming increasingly popular as it allows you to
have direct control over the location of your website, regardless of your 'marketing strategies or optimization techniques'.
P.P.C or Paid Placement can become a costly venture, as you pay a predetermined dollar amount which correlates to you direct location in the search results, the higher the dollar amount, the higher your placement. The ultimate reward being for positions 1,2 &3. What this means is that you will be featured in the "sponsored listings" section at the top of a broad platform of Search Engine Partners. These listings appear first, before the standard results of that particular Search Engine. Often times the cost for these 'top' positions is near or more than $1 per click through, meaning if 10 people visit your site in a day, your total cost would be $10 for that particular day. <<Overture, LookSmart>>
- Yahoo® - Yahoo is the top provider of search results on the internet today. They have remained on top for
several years now providing millions of referrals each day. Recent changes have dictated that all commercial websites, pay for review.
This charge covers only the time involved to have a Yahoo® Directory Editor review your website for inclusion. Websites are then judged on the basis of validity, content, function & reliability. This fee does not guarantee inclusion to the Yahoo® search listings. This simply means that your site will be reviewed.
- They are currently in the process of removing all commercial websites that have not applied for placement in this way.
In the meantime, Google.com in partnership with Yahoo® will be supplying a presence for websites previously listed with Yahoo®, until such time as Google makes its final transition to either "Paid placement" or "Paid Inclusion".
